29 Les Paul legends: Tom Scholz

More wizards of the Goldtop, Sunburst and Custom

3/15 Tom Scholz: One "Smokin'" guitarist

Tom Scholz was just your average MIT graduate and senior product design engineer for Polaroid when he recorded some demos in his basement with a little band he called Boston.

That group (and their self-titled album) would enjoy one of the biggest debuts in music history. Key to their sound is a 1957 Les Paul goldtop Scholz bought for $300.

While Scholz also became famous for inventions such as the Rockman and Power Soak, his dense, multi-tracked rhythms and soaring solos would be unthinkable without his goldtop (which sports a Mighty Mouse decal) and a 68 model he purchased as a backup.

Scholz keeps P-90s in the neck position of his Les Pauls, but he installed DiMarzio Super Distortion humbuckers at the bridge to minimize RF interference from stage lights. In addition, the bridges are outfitted with "gang tuning wheels" to allow for accurate pitch during outdoor shows.

Once a tinkerer, always a tinkerer.

5K Run/Walk For Ovarian Cancer 09.19.09

On September 19, 2009, some of Kyle's friends will be participating in the girlygirl P.A.R.T.S"! (Pre-Screening Awareness Required To Silence...Ovarian Cancer) 5K Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer in honor of Kyle Sweet. Kyle valiantly lost her battle to ovarian cancer on March 5, 2009, but her vision for raising awareness to this disease lives on within each one of us.

Ovarian cancer is a silent predator, which is why we must make all the noise we can. The reason ovarian cancer is often called the "disease that whispers" is because the early warning signs often mimic other common conditions. By the time most women get the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, the disease is usually in the late stages with poor prognosis. Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S"! has partnered with Dana Farber Cancer Institute to provide information relating to ovarian cancer and to increase awareness to this "silent" disease. This is the first fundraiser for this organization and all monies raised will provide the initial funding towards molecular science research in search for an ovarian cancer screening test.

Your support in donating to Team Kyle Sweet gives hope to thousands of women; our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, who currently battle ovarian cancer, and to thousands more who don't even know they will. Kyle so eloquently wrote, "Those of us fighting this monster are frustrated by the silence, the whisper of this disease." Please join us in raising awareness and finally changing the 'whisper' to a "voice."

Your tax-deductible donation can be made on-line at http://www.active.com/donate/girlygirlparts/teamkylesweet

We realize that this is a tough economy, but if you are inclined, and able to give, we thank you in advance for your generous support and assistance in raising awareness to this disease.

Team Kyle Sweet

FlightPatterns

Stryper s gig at the House of Blues Friday will be a family affair. That s because Flight Patterns, the Cape Cod combo opening the show, is fronted by Michael Sweet Jr., who s the 22-year-old son of Stryper singer Michael Sweet. (The Christian pop-metal band is celebrating its 25th anniversary.) Sweet s been performing of late with Boston, and we re told guitarists Tom Scholz and Gary Pihl will be taking the stage with Stryper.
